A Year of Reading

I recently finished reading The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass, which are books 2 & 3 (respectively) in the His Dark Materials Series by Philip Pullman. Both of these books, as the first, have multiple stories woven throughout. I enjoyed all the little details and the descriptions of the different worlds. Though the story of Lyra continues as the main thread with a fight between two factions. I hesitate to label either side "good" or "evil" as each side could have been described as such by the other. Each side has a purpose for finding Lyra.

The side connected with "The Church," wishes to kill her before she "becomes of age" and faces a "great temptation." As the result of a prophesy they see her as a version of "Eve" by whom sin entered the world and they desire to eliminate her to prevent the possibility that she will not overcome the "great temptation." The other side, led by Lyra's father, seeks to destroy the first side and stop the oppressive power they have displayed.

Overall the entire series is amazing. Lyra does pass her test - but the test was not what I imagined. While it falls into the juvenile fantasy genre, I think the content is more suitable to older teens and adults.
