A Year of Reading

I attempted to read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. It is written from the perspective of a man who finds prepubescent girls attractive. He considers his reasons perfectly rational and perhaps they have merit. However, the topic disturbed me greatly and I chose to not continue reading the book but still consider it read. My plan was to also read Reading Lolita in Tehran - a Memoir in Books. I still plan to read it, but I'm not sure when.

Perhaps some of my readers may think that only partially reading a book doesn't count as completing the list. I disagree. The idea of reading all these books is to also place a purpose in my pleasure reading. Reading is a favorite activity and often I found myself reaching for old favorites rather than exploring new friends. I want this to be enjoyable and not a dreaded task of duty.

I suppose this could be a reflection of my past life: duty instead of pleasure; rigid instead of flexible; rules instead of spirit. Over the past year, I have grown and changed. I want my life to expand instead of shrink. Thus, I read.

And even if you haven't finished it, you formed an opinion about it based on experience. And that's a book report in itself.
