Pentecost is the theme for May. It is the conclusion of the Easter Season and celebrates when the Holy Spirit came as a roaring wind and tongues of flame that rested upon the early Christians.
"And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim." Acts 2: 2-4 (NAB)
The ministry of the holy Spirit began that day and continues to this day. Pentecost is also the day that neophytes (aka new Catholics) are now considered part of the faithful. It is a day of contradiction - of endings and of beginnings. The ending of the initial journey from seeker to Faithful to the beginning of lifetime of seeking God as a Roman Catholic.
As I reflect upon my journey thus far, I can almost see the seeds being sown, watered, and nurtured as they grow from bud to flower. Steps along the way include visiting Jasna Gora in Poland and seeing Our Lady of Czestochowa, a college boyfriend's challenging conversations and his gift of a crucifix purchased in Rome during the Jubilee Year, attending grad school at a Catholic university and attending mass occasionally, conversations with a good friend who is Catholic and her patient answers to my questions.
The journey is not over! Pentecost is just the beginning of learning how God is going to use me and the indwelling holy Spirit in the Catholic church.
