May - Shopping Fast Begins

Ok, I've decided to have a shopping fast during May and I wanted to post the rules on my blog so my personal blog readers can keep me accountable.

1) Groceries are okay if I'm out of or don't have an item needed for a recipe.
2) It is okay to replace an item if I am completely out (or will run out before the next shopping trip.).
3) It is ok to use a gift card.
3) unmindful Shopping/spending not allowed.
4) Buying gas for the car is ok, especially if I'm where there is cheap gas.
5) Paying someone for yard assistance is ok. (not mindless shopping...)

I'm open for suggestions & plan to report on my progress and any cool stories.

So far, I'm doing good. I must confess that yesterday, I "grazed" in the Paper Garden - a fun store that has cards, journals, gifty items, and even personal care items. A couple of months ago, I noticed they carried my facecare products (Dr. Hauschka) and I since I was out of my face cleanser I stopped by to buy some. Unfortunately, I did not see any displayed and so I asked. It turns out that their display table had collapsed and product was broken. The guy said there were some items in the storeroom and he would check for me. He came back and gave me a tube of what I use and something else I have been wanting to try for Free - compliments of management. It turns out they had been damaged (cosmetically - the tubes were still sealed) and they couldn't sell them.

Sweet! What I needed - for free!

So cool! I'd suggest two things
1. Loosen the grocery fast, or use this time to start a price book so you can start stocking up on super-loss-leader sale items when you're sure they're dirt cheap (for example, this morning we combined a great sale and coupons to get 5 bags of snack mix, 7 boxes of granola bars , and 8 boxes of cereal for $17)
2. Allow yourself to spend on unbeatable secondhand deals for house stuff. Not cosmetic stuff--tools, things that will eventually allow you to do it yourself and save money.
You've already found the best saver of all--asking! It's amazing how often someone has something you need.

Okay. Quick rule change on grocery items. If there is a MEGA SALE and I will actually use the item within a reasonable time, I am allowed to purchase multiples of the item.

Good point on the second hand deals - I do need some more yard tools and organizer items.
