I just finished reading Persuasion by Jane Austen. Amazing. It is my new favorite Jane Austen book. Gasp! Alas, it will probably not be made into a best selling movie.
The main character, Anne, is not outspoken. At the beginning her appearance is not of any beauty. She appears to be a nothing in a family over endowed with inflated egos. To her family, she is "only Anne;" useful for caring for others and soothing their sorrows - real or imagined. She is a subtle, introspective introvert who, like all JA's heroines, gets her man in the end. The story reveals how she spurned a past lover as a result of a close friends persuading opinion that the engagement should be given up due to the young man's lack of fortune. Eight years later when he reenters her life as a wealthy naval captain, the reader discovers that her heart has been true to him and wishes to escape his presence and the heart pain it inflicts. The book shares the tale of how two hearts, true to each other despite obstacles and other potential lovers, find each other in the end.
I highly recommend this book for the romantic at heart. It will satisfy your desires for a beautiful ending. I also recommend it for those jaded in love as it will give you hope that love prevails.
I plan to add this book to my personal library.
