Initially, I was not impressed with The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. I was not very encouraged to keep reading after the first page. In fact, I put it down and read another book first. Then I found myself without a book to read, so I picked it up again and entered another world. A world where people had "daemons" that are an extension of themselves - in essence a soul or spirit in physical form. Although, this is is a children's book, the writing is suitable for adults. I found it to be a quick read and was able to immerse myself into the adventures of Lyra as she enters her destiny. The book is rife with intrigue, adventure, and hope. Overall it was an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series: The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
Note: This book listed as His Dark Materials on the BBC list
