The Shack by William P. Young is not on the Beat the BBC list, however, it was recommended by a friend. The description & their recommendation intrigued me so I decided to check it out. WOW!! I was completely blown away. There were moments when tears starting trickling down my face and others when shrieking laughter came out of my mouth. My one complaint is that the main character Mack uses quite a few idioms in his speech and other word choices would have been better. My friend said the book changed his view of God. For me, it is changing my view of relationships and my attitude towards God. It is still in process. I checked the book out from the library and plan to renew it as many times as possible in order to re-read and absorb different sections of the book.
One chapter that spoke especially strong to me is called, Here Come Da Judge. The idea that I judge God caused me to pause, think and realize it is true. I make judgments everyday. I judge my co-workers, friends, strangers on the bus. I judge myself for not doing everything 'just right' or for making mistakes. I judge God for not giving me my heart desires. Wow. I judge God - an imperfect human-being attempting to judge the God of the universe. Presumptuous of me. and quite convicting.
The image of the God as Holy Spirit as a verb was powerful. The idea of living, acting and moving rather than static. The idea of moving "from law to grace"(207) is freeing. Do I choose to live my life actively or passively? Changing or remaining the same?
Overall, I highly recommend this book. Despite its sorrow, it is a book of redemption; a book that demonstrates God's love.
